Do you need a visa for Serbia? A country-by-country answer
Who enters visa-free, who needs an invitation letter, and how we help with the paperwork.
Most of our guests do not need a visa for Serbia. Citizens of the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and many other countries can enter visa-free for short stays. For everyone else, the process is manageable if you start early.
This article explains how the rules work. Visa rules change, so always confirm your own case on the official list of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia (mfa.gov.rs) before you book flights.
The general rule
- Visa-free for short stays: citizens of the EU and Schengen countries, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and a number of other countries can usually stay up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa.
- Visa-free with a valid visa or residence permit of another country: holders of a valid Schengen, UK or US visa, or a residence permit of those countries, can in many cases enter Serbia without a separate Serbian visa for a limited stay. The visa must be valid for the whole period you are in Serbia.
- Visa required: citizens of countries not on the visa-free list apply at a Serbian embassy or consulate before travel.
The details differ by nationality and by the kind of passport you hold, which is why the official list is the only source to rely on.
Documents you should always carry
- A passport valid for at least the length of your stay (some border officers expect more; three months beyond departure is a safe margin).
- Proof of accommodation or a hotel booking.
- Enough funds for the stay, and a return or onward ticket.
- Travel health insurance is strongly recommended and required for visa applicants.
Registration on arrival
Foreign visitors must be registered with the police within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels and licensed apartments do this for you automatically. If you stay privately, with friends or in an unlicensed apartment, the host must register you; ask about it when you book.
If you need a visa
A Serbian visa application usually asks for an application form, photos, the passport, travel insurance, proof of funds and an invitation letter or proof of the purpose of travel. For tourist trips, a letter from a Serbian travel company with confirmed bookings serves as that proof.
Start at least four to six weeks before travel. Processing times vary by consulate and season.
