About this tour

This is the tour we recommend to anyone with five days and one country to spend them in. It starts in Sarajevo, where an Ottoman bazaar, an Austro-Hungarian main street and the story of the 1990s siege sit within a few hundred metres of each other, and follows the Neretva south through its canyon to Herzegovina, where the light, the food and the temperature all change.

Driving days are short, never more than three hours behind the wheel, and every stop is reached on foot from where the minibus parks. You sleep two nights in each city, so there is one full day in Sarajevo and one in Mostar without packing. The group is small enough to eat at the same table.

1. Day 1
   Arrival in SarajevoMeet the tour leader at your hotel at 17:00. An evening walk through Baščaršija, the Ottoman bazaar: the Sebilj fountain, the coppersmiths' street and the Gazi Husrev-beg mosque and bezistan. 2. Day 2
   Sarajevo, from the bazaar to the tunnelA full day on foot and by minibus. Morning: the Latin Bridge where the First World War began, Ferhadija street and the restored City Hall (Vijećnica), then the Yellow Bastion for the view over the roofs and the valley. After lunch, the Tunnel of Hope museum by the airport, where the city was supplied during the siege, and a drive up to the abandoned Olympic bobsleigh track on Trebević. 3. Day 3
   The Neretva canyon, Konjic and MostarSouth along the Neretva. First stop Konjic, a small town with a restored Ottoman stone bridge from 1682 and, on request booked in advance, Tito's Cold War bunker (ARK D-0) dug into the hill outside town. Lunch by Lake Jablanica, then on through the canyon to Mostar. 4. Day 4
   Blagaj, Počitelj and an afternoon in MostarA short loop through Herzegovina. Blagaj, where the Buna river comes out of a cliff beside a 16th-century dervish house; then Počitelj, a fortified Ottoman village on a hillside above the Neretva, with a climb to the tower for the view. Lunch under the vines. 5. Day 5
   Back to SarajevoA slow morning in Mostar, then the drive back up the canyon to Sarajevo with a coffee stop on the way. The tour ends at Sarajevo airport or your hotel by about 13:00.
